Artist Leland Standley describes his atmospheric, expressive painting The Road to Minimalism and his artistic process as an exploration and discovery of the boundary "between comprehension and awe".

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Nooksack Valley School District.

About the Artist

Northwest painter Leland Standley (1933-2016) created gestural and expressive landscapes. Describing his artistic process, Leland noted "I paint in the spirit that celebrates the union of humankind with nature". He was a resident of Vashon Island in South Puget Sound, Western Washington, for over 25 years.
