About the Artwork
Forkville is part of artist Sally Sellers' series of quilts composed by mixing and layering colorful patterns. Sellers began to experiment with non-traditional quilt designs after her young daughter was diagnosed with a serious illness. Sellers notes that her quilting began to challenge the restrictions of perfection and control. This piece also suggests ideas about boundaries, passages, and transitions. She notes that when designing the interlocking forks, she "enjoyed manipulating the foreground and background transition. I liked it that what was at first the background to a fork was, at the same time, another fork shape… This switching of perspective, one of my favorite devices, was also in keeping with my new understanding of the ambiguity I faced every day in life."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma Public Schools.
