About the Artwork

Fear of Flying is the first in a series of mixed-media artworks by artist Katherine Holzknecht in which a central watercolor painting is framed by found-objects and uncommon materials. This piece depicts a mother bird coaxing a chick to leap from the nest, and was based on sketches the artist made of swallows and starlings visible from her studio window. She notes that this piece explores how we as people relate to change, encouraging us to "swallow our fear and take that first big step."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Omak School District.
