About the Artwork

Artist Ann Gardner constructed Solitare as a collage made from monoprints, which she cuts up and "quilts" back together. A monoprint is created by painting directly onto the printing plate, and only one print copy can be made from the plate. She uses pattern to "focus on the importance of seemingly inconsequential daily tasks that weave a social fabric helping center and ground people in their daily lives. This patterning reflects a sense of order on the most basic level and is not only found in this culture but many different cultures in their weavings, pottery, quilting etc."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Wahluke School District.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Ann Gardner creates sculptures using glass and mosaic materials. Her works explore pattern and rhythm in organic forms. She studied ceramics and fine art at the University of Oregon and Portland State University.
