Red Window, 1994

American (born 1953)

Location: John Muir Elementary School, Seattle

About the Artwork

Artist Stuart Nakamura's two paneled painting Red Window is part of the artist's "Duet Series." The artwork depicts two figures sharing a private conversation, and Nakamura notes that he chose to compose the figures partially obscured because he "wanted to tell a story about what is happening between the two people using as little of the figure as possible, letting the viewer imagine the rest of the action." Windows are also a common symbol in the artist's work, and act as metaphors "for seeing or revealing more than one meaning in life."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Seattle Public Schools.
