About the Artwork

Sekka V is part of artist Susan Kristoferson's 'Sekka' series of sewn paper collages. These artworks celebrate color and pattern using a traditional Japanese dying technique called "Shibori." This technique uses folding, blocking and binding to create various dyed patterns. The use of "Shibori" dates to the 8th century in Japan. The title 'Sekka' refers to a specific type of "Shibori" dying which creates patterns that resemble snowflakes. The artist notes that the series is also inspired by the patterns in traditional quilts.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Onalaska School District.
