About the Artwork

Out of the Box by Volkan Alkanoglu celebrates creativity and the boundless possibilities of thinking outside of conventional limits. This colorful artwork, located at the heart of the shared UW Bothell and Cascadia College campus, is a visual reminder of the transformative power of imagination and innovation. The sculpture is shaped like an upward- and outward-expanding box, made of hundreds of small, painted aluminum pieces.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.

About the Artist

Volkan Alkanoglu creates public art that explores futuristic designs through materials, technology, and how humans interact in public spaces.

Alkanoglu was born in Turkey and raised in Germany. He earned a Master of Architectural Design degree at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, England. He has been part of the design faculty at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles and at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design in Massachusetts. He is based in the Pacific Northwest, in Portland, Oregon.
