About the Artwork

Higher, Higher by Katy Stone is a suspended sculpture made of thousands of aluminum and mirrored acrylic laser-cut shapes attached to stainless steel wire. The artwork’s individual elements mass together to suggest mountain peaks or arrows pointing upwards. It is inspired by the Olympic Mountains and Stone notes: “As they rise to the west above the community of Silverdale, not only are these mountains a monumental presence on the horizon, they are also a timeless metaphor for the journey of education, for the ascensions and aspirations that are part of every student, teacher, staff and parent’s life.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Kitsap School District.

About the Artist

Seattle-based artist Katy Stone creates painted sculptural assemblages and installations for public spaces. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Iowa State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from the University of Washington in Seattle.
