Blossoming, 2022

Kate Sweeney
American (born 1956)

Location: Lynndale Elementary, Lynnwood

About the Artwork

Kate Sweeney describes her colorful Blossoming installation as a meadow in bloom where each flower is "a unique and precious member of a community which nurtures their growth and celebrates it with joy." All of Sweeney's artworks are influenced by ideas from science and math. She uses the same ten-sided shape to create geometric flower patterns to cover the wall with similar but non-repeating patterns. Each flower's color pattern is designed by a Lynndale Elementary School student. Over 250 flowers come together in the artwork to create "a community of growing, learning, joyous hearts." The base panels use a mathematical tiling system created by mathematician Petra Gummelt.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Edmonds School District.
