About the Artwork

Colleen Bratton’s I Felt the News Today is part of her "Empirical Sun" series that describes the delicate and complicated relationship between the self and the sun. The series uses what Bratton calls a "language of the senses" that involves both sight and touch through warm colors, different textures, and temperatures. Bratton also researched the sun, its symbolism, its role within history, and its implications for the future to create this series. This artwork is part of a curated collection by Dawna Holloway in May 2021 at Pioneer Elementary, in Shelton, Western Washington. Holloway’s focus is the mystery of this world we find ourselves in together. Art can show us the world around us, as well as new ways of looking. Art is a tool and a language to express our vision of the world. These art examples remind us that art and its expression is always available to all of us.

About the Artist

Colleen RJC Bratton is haunted by visions of a climate change and an altered environment. Her art uses a language of the senses that blends spirituality, a science-fiction sensibility, and a refined color palette.
Bratton earned a Bachelor of Art degree in visual arts and philosophy from Seattle University in 2012.
