About the Artwork
The artist team of Alexis Gregg and Tanner Coleman created Wheat to Wheel to highlight and celebrate the natural wonders of the Palouse in Southeastern Washington. The brick sculpture reflects the forms and features of the area. The Palouse’s geology and unique landscape make it excellent farmland. The sculpture is also a place to sit and gather. Images of a wagon wheel, the sun, the Palouse River, and more can be seen in the artwork. Gregg and Coleman created and assembled the 22-foot-long brick sculpture in their Macon, Georgia studio. They then took it apart and numbered each brick for shipment to Colton, Washington. The key to the re-assembly and final installation was finding and hiring a local brick mason, which is not a simple task in rural Eastern Washington.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Colton School District.
