About the Artwork

Artist Kyle Dillehay's Growth sculpture represents the students, their studies, and the rural, agricultural community of Sunnyside in Central Washington. We see stacked farm crates, local fruits and vegetables such as apples, cherries, and asparagus, as well as books, a microscope, a female researcher, a welder, and more. Dillehay shows us the community's history but also its present and future. He shows us an agricultural community that is embracing science and research. Many of the objects were cast in bronze using the actual objects, not sculpted from clay. Dillehay is known as a semi-abstract sculptor but he was excited to propose a sculpture with realistic elements.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Sunnyside School District.

About the Artist

Kyle Dillehay is a sculptor whose work is evocative and symbolic. He is also a photographer with an interest in historical photography processes of the mid-1800s.
Dillehay received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture and photography from Auburn University in Alabama. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Georgia State University. He is a professor of sculpture and photography at Tacoma Community College in Western Washington.
