About the Artwork

Artist Luke Blackstone's kinetic installation Homeostasis refers to a state of stability and equilibrium among independent elements. Comprised of blue, rotating glass spheres, a human figure emerges when the spheres align in their resting position. Describing the symbolism of this piece, Blackstone notes: "when all elements of the human body and mind are in place, a state of wellness is likely to follow... when elements are in disarray, a sense of confusion and dis-ease may occur." The artwork pays homage to the fierce struggle of the human body and mind to maintain a state of stability within, and the compassionate response of those who care.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Bellevue College.

About the Artist

Canadian artist Luke Blackstone creates conceptual, interactive, and kinetic sculptures for public spaces.
Blackstone received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of Washington in Seattle. He is based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.
