Ways of Knowing, 2017

Robert Leverich
American (born 1953)

Location: Vashon Island High School, Vashon Island

About the Artwork

Artist Robert Leverich created the sculpture Ways of Knowing from Cascade Granite. He sourced the stone from the Cascade Mountains, weathered and shaped by nature over thousands of years. The installation features two halves of a hollowed boulder, opening out over three long stone slabs. A polished band of stone runs along each slab like a pathway. The sculpture serves as an engaging meeting place and a landmark for the Vashon Island High School community. When designing the sculpture, the artist thought about "islands like Vashon as points of embarkation and return, with distinctive cultures; about education as drawing out knowledge rather than pushing it in; and about ways—the slipways used to launch boats, seaways, roadways… pathways."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vashon Island School District.
