About the Artwork

DATA by Sue Richards and Peter Richards is a colorful graphic representing data from fifty-two years of tidal history for the city of Everett, in northern Puget Sound. The data is contrasted with a representation of sea level rise (in darker blue, at the bottom) and an EKG (electrocardiogram) reading (in yellow) which traces a human heartbeat. The artists note, "We use data to describe, understand, and to ultimately make ourselves comfortable in this world... We hope to inspire thinking about how closely our lives are intertwined with the systems of nature and how our actions impact them." These wall panels are paired with another artwork, nearby sculptural benches shaped to represent an EKG reading.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Everett Community College.
