About the Artwork
Ryan LaBar creates precarious sculptures by weaving together ceramic elements that shift and deform in the kiln, causing a cascading series of "failures" that, once hardened enough to remain stable, become a singular whole.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Peninsula College.
About the Artist
Portland, Oregon-based artist Ryan LaBar creates clay sculptures. He layers multiple elements, developing systems out of individual parts. The cause and effect displayed in his systems represents change over time.
LaBar received a Bachelor of Science degree in biology and art from Gonzaga Univeristy in Spokane, Eastern Washington in 1998. He received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln in 2010. He has taught at Eastern Oregon University, University of Nebraska, and Doane College in Lincoln, Nebraska.
