About the Artwork

Artist Susan Aurand's Wahitis presents different facets of the natural and cultural history near the town of Othello, in Central Washington. The six parts of the artwork represent: the geologic formation of the landscape by volcanic eruption, the shaping of the Potholes by the Missoula floods, the cultural heritage of the nearby Wanapum Tribe of the Yakama Nation, the Othello pioneers, present-day farming, and the abundance of nature and childhood imagination. Many of the petroglyphs in the art were designed by Othello students to symbolize important aspects of their own lives.

You can see and read more about the artwork's symbolism and content in the PDF document linked under "Lesson Plans and Documents".

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Othello School District.
