About the Artwork

Miles Pepper's artwork was inspired by an Iroquois story of collaboration, where a small thrush soars high on an eagle's back until the eagle can go no further. The thrush journeys higher on its own, eventually hearing beautiful music and bringing it back to earth. At Michael Anderson Elementary, the story is a metaphor for the relationship of students to their teachers.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Medical Lake School District.

About the Artist

Pullman, Eastern Washington-based artist Miles Pepper creates kinetic sculptures for public spaces.
Pepper received a Bachelor of Arts degree from University of California, Davis. He received a Master of Arts degree from Washington State University in Pullman, where he is now on the faculty in the College of Engineering and Architecture Design and Fabrication Shop.
