About the Artwork

Reflections is a richly detailed painting by artist Janet Essley. The composition suggests ideas about the cycle of life and the interaction of species. A Buddhist nun walks alongside a musk ox and jellyfish. While Essley notes that she was thinking about Buddhism and Darwin’s theory of evolution, she acknowledges that viewers will create their own interpretation of the painting. She welcomes this multiplicity, and notes, “Conversations created by art are one of its essential contributions to human culture.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Edmonds School District.
