About the Artwork

China and Quilback with Shrimp is part of artist Patricia McGuire's body of prints created using the traditional Japanese "gyotaku" technique, in which fish are rolled in ink and pressed into paper. McGuire states that her goal as an artist is to "create a sense of quiet wilderness beneath the waters and beyond our shores" and "to represent the fish of the North Pacific Ocean in their natural environment."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Riverview School District.

About the Artist

Northwest artist Patricia McGuire creates prints and collages that focus on "gyotaku", a traditional Japanese method of fish-printing. She lives and works as an artist, teacher, and commercial fisherman in Washington and Alaska.
