About the Artwork
Updraft is an illuminated mixed media sculpture created by artist Katherine Holzknecht. It is composed of salvaged metal, copper rods, acrylic tubing, and dichroic glass. This type of glass contains multiple colors that change depending on light and the viewer's position. Conceived as a abstract depiction of a campfire, with flying sparks and curling smoke, the composition is inspired by the artist's childhood memories of roasting marshmallows while camping.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Highland School District.
