About the Artwork
Waterfall is part of a three-part installation by artist Irene Pijoan. The three artworks conceptually depict different human systems and relate to the medical specialties at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. The artwork is about healing and lists the names of sixty people who have been important to biomedical research and medecine, from the 13th century (at the bottom) to the present (towards the top). The artwork honors the medical advances and ideas that have changed public health. It is installed at a side entrance that is used by doctors working in the building.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.
About the Artist
Artist Irene Pijoan (1953-2004) created conceptually powerful figurative and abstract artworks using a wide range of materials and techniques. She was an influential professor at the San Francisco Art Institute in California for over 20 years.
