About the Artwork

In artist Ann Grayson's painting, Grandma's Chair we see a solitary figure enjoying the breeze floating in through an open window. Grayson notes, "As an urban child in a very crowded world, I always imagined that if l had a grandmother, I could go to her house and rest and be cared for. Grandma's house and chair were imaginary places for me to gather my strength."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Evergreen School District.

About the Artist

African American artist Ann Grayson creates paintings that capture the beauty in everyday moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. She focuses on celebrating and giving representation to African American culture and identity.
Born in New York City, Grayson began by painting people she saw in the city. She moved to Western Washington state in 1992.
