About the Artwork

In the Waking Hour is a painting by artist Shani Marchant. It shows a colorful underwater scene populated by coral, a turtle, and fish. She notes, "In my mind the ocean is a place, a vast expanse of places, really, that rivals the grandeur, mystery, and fantasy of the Grand Canyon or Yellowstone."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Vancouver Public Schools.

About the Artist

Shani Marchant is a Spokane, Washington-based artist who creates expressive paintings and drawings that explore both figuration and abstraction.

Marchant received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Fort George Wright College (currently Spokane Falls Community College) in Spokane. She continued her studies in New York City at the Art Students League and Hunter College. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Maryland Institute College of Art. Marchant has taught art at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire and at Spokane Falls Community College.
