Cornered is a pastel drawing created by artist Randy Hayes. He used different colors to create the impression of light, shadows, and reflections on skin. The image shows a young man coached by an older man in the corner of a boxing ring.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Stevens School District.

About the Artist

Mississippi-based artist Randy Hayes creates figurative paintings, drawings, and photographs. He is known for his method of painting directly onto grids of photographs.
Born in Mississippi, Hayes studied sculpture and painting at Rhodes College in Tennessee. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Memphis College of Art in Tennessee in 1968. He lived and made art in Seattle from 1976 to 2013, where he also ran a bookstore and gallery for several years. He returned to Mississippi in 2013.
