About the Artwork
Because We Can't Eat Rocks II is a print by artist Steven Scheibe. It is part of his exploration of food as a metaphor for our deeper needs. He states that this artwork "is a visual pun. I noticed a clear similarity of stones and bread when in black and white. Consider with me how similar they look and how different they are. Looking closely in this image, one should find eight ordinary bakery breads and many river stones." Scheibe created this print using a stone lithography process from the 1700s. First, he drew the image onto a stone using a crayon. He wetted the stone and applied ink, which stuck only to the crayon-drawn areas. He then printed the image onto paper.
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Granite Falls School District.
