About the Artwork

Artist Rebecca Allan created this portrait of Frederick Douglass as part of her "Suffragette Series" about people of the abolitionist and women's suffrage movements. The series also highlights their interconnected histories. A central leader of the abolitionist movement, Douglass was an influential speaker and a vocal advocate for women's rights.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lake Washington School District.
