ReStart Washington Grant

About this grant

ArtsWA is pleased to offer operating support for arts nonprofits (501c3) and fiscally sponsored arts organizations recovering from economic harm caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Recipients may use funds for expenses incurred from March 3, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Incurred expenses cannot be previously covered by CARES or ARPA relief and recovery funding. Ongoing expenses (rent, utilities, etc.) are eligible if they have not been previously or already covered by CARES or ARPA relief funding. Grants are open to arts organizations of all sizes. The grants are intended to stabilize operations, stimulate hiring and rehiring, and relaunch public programs.

The ReStart Washington grant application cycle will open on October 1, 2021 and close on November 15, 2021.

This grant program is made possible by funding from the State of Washington and the United States Treasury.

  • Organizations may request up to $7,000
  • Requests may not exceed more than 80% of income loss between 2019 & 2020. Income totals reported may be adjusted to remove relief funding received (PPP, CARES, etc.) for the purposes of this grant
  • No funding match required

Application Information

The ReStart Washington grant application cycle will open on October 1, 2021 and close on November 15, 2021.

  • Nonprofit arts and cultural organizations with current federal tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, including those affiliated with tribal organizations.
  • Fiscally sponsored arts and cultural groups and organizations. Groups must be sponsored by nonprofit organizations that have arts, culture, and/or heritage in their mission statement.
  • All applicants must have a minimum of three-year-history of providing arts programming.

Who Is Not Eligible to Apply?

  • Individuals
  • For-profit organizations
  • Political or advocacy organizations
  • Organizations based outside of Washington

Applications submitted by the deadline are reviewed by ArtsWA staff for completion and eligibility. Complete and eligible applications will be evaluated on funding priorities:

  • Financial Need
  • Arts, Creativity, and Cultural Programming
  • Geographic Location

Financial Need
Organizations must demonstrate reduced revenue from 2019 to 2020 due to COVID-19. The application will ask for your 2019 and 2020 gross (total) revenue. You must show the difference between the two operating year’s revenue. You may be eligible for up to 80% of the decrease in revenue for expenses and losses that are not previously covered by pandemic relief funding.

Arts, Creativity, and Cultural Programming

  • Organization or group’s mission statement, programs, and services demonstrates access to arts, creativity, and culture experiences for the public, including education programs.
  • Services are culturally relevant to communities the organization serves, especially ones that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19.

Geographic Location

  • ArtsWA will prioritize applications from outside of King County. This is to ensure that all creative sector organizations within Washington State receive pandemic funding. This is to ensure that less resourced parts of our state have access to support. We will consider the county where your organization is based, not where your organization provides services.
  • Organizations within King County will still be considered for funding. For additional resources within King County, please refer to 4Culture’s Sustained Support + Recovery Grant and King County’s Revive and Thrive Together

Recommendations and Board Approval

  • ArtsWA makes funding recommendations to the board of commissioners based on funding priorities.
  • Funding recommendations are presented to the ArtsWA Executive Director for approval.
