WHAT IS THE PUBLIC ARTIST ROSTER?

The Pubic Artist Roster is a roster of professional visual artists eligible for ½ of 1% for art projects through the Washington State Arts Commission's Art in Public Places program.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

The Public Artist Roster competition is open to artists from the United States and British Columbia, Canada. Undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in an ongoing course of study in the visual arts are ineligible.

HOW ARE ARTISTS SELECTED?

A professional peer review panel evaluates artistic excellence and technical abilities based on the submitted application. This review ensures that all artwork commissioned through the program meets our criteria and that local Art Selection Committees view the work of professional visual artists.

WHAT IS THE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROGRAM?

The Art in Public Places program facilitates the acquisition, placement, and stewardship of artwork in state-funded buildings throughout Washington state.

WHO ARE THE PANELISTS?

The panel includes artists and arts professionals, and changes each time a competition is held. The 2015 competition panelists are Laura Becker, Ralph Helmick, Amy McBride, Shaun Peterson, and Frank Video.

CAN ARTIST TEAMS APPLY TO THE ROSTER?

Yes. Artist teams of up to 5 artists may apply; team members cannot also apply as individual artists. The portfolio submitted with an application should be comprised of works created by the team and not those of the individuals on the team.

WHAT IS A SHORT DESCRIPTIVE NARRATIVE?

Describe the imagery or concepts of the artwork in 250 characters or less. In addition to being part of your materials for the roster competition these narratives will be read aloud to local Art Selection Committees if you are selected to be on the roster.

HOW DO I DETERMINE "TOTAL ARTWORK COST" FOR A PIECE?

If the artwork is a permanent commission, include all associated costs from proposal/design through to fabrication and installation.

ONCE ACCEPTED, HOW WILL MY PORTFOLIO BE USED?

Once accepted to the Public Artist Roster, artists are eligible for site-responsive percent-for-art projects in Washington's public schools, state agencies, colleges, and universities. Art Selection Committees from approximately 40 sites review and select artists from the Roster each year by reviewing the same materials you are submitting for the competition. The selected artist then develops a proposal for that site and, if accepted, is commissioned to create the proposed artwork. Once commissioned, artists create works with budgets ranging from $35,000 - $200,000 (or more).

WILL I BE CHARGED A FEE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION?

No. The entire submission process is free.

CAN I SUBMIT A PAPER APPLICATION?

No. Paper applications will not be accepted.
