About the Artwork

West From the School Yard depicts houses on a Seattle hillside. It is based on artist Juliana Heyne's drawings and photographs of the scene. Although it is a recognizable scene, the artwork also explores the emotional and visual resonance of abstract shapes and the interactions of colors.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Yakima School District.

About the Artist

Seattle-based painter Juliana Heyne captures imagery based on her travels near and far. She is inspired by the beauty of aging cities, construction sites, and natural structures in the middle of nowhere. In her own words "No matter the subject matter, there's some kind of beauty at its core that draws me."
