About the Artwork

Part of a series that reference quilts and textiles, artist Manya Shapiro composed Scrolls using handmade papers created during her travels to Japan on a Textile Artists' Tour in 1989. The artist notes "Scrolls are a traditional use of paper, and carry associations in many cultures. One is aware that these scrolls will never be opened, so their contents are left to the imagination."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Kent School District.

About the Artist

Portland, Oregon-based fiber artist Manya Shapiro combines traditional techniques with non-traditional materials to create abstract and conceptual artworks. She was born in Seattle, Washington and attended the University of Washington.
