Fledge, 2019

Anne Storrs
American (born 1953)

Location: Desert Hills Middle School, Kennewick

About the Artwork

Fledge by Anne Storrs was inspired by a red-tailed hawk pair who was nesting close by. The hawk couple were often spotted by the artist and students during the creation and installation of the sculpture. Mounted on an exterior wall, the artwork looks like a tall tree with a nest in its branches that contains a red hawk feather. The artwork also tells the story of the Desert Hills Middle School students who, like the hawk chicks, are ready to fly. The plaque says: "Two hawks make a nest in an isolated tree. The female lays eggs, warms them until they hatch. She continues to brood while the male gathers food for the mother to feed the chicks. Soon the young are ready to fly."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Kennewick School District.
