Mosaic Artworks

Mosaics have a long history, starting in Mesopotamia (today’s Iraq, in the Middle East) over 4,000 years ago. They were used to decorate floors and walls.

A mosaic is a made up of small pieces of glass, tile, stone, or many other materials. Mortar or plaster holds the mosaic pieces in place. The colors and variations of the small mosaic pieces are carefully arranged to create a larger image or pattern on a surface or object.

Washington’s State Art Collection includes a variety of mosaic artworks. It also features several Pacific Northwest artists who often use mosaic techniques in their artworks: Carl Bryant and Sandra Bryant of Lynden, Ann Gardner of Seattle, and Mauricio Robalino of Tacoma.
