Fiber Art and Textiles

Textiles have been an important part of human life since the beginning of civilization. Textile artworks use plant, animal, or man-made fibers to make practical or decorative objects, or a combination of both. They include weaving, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, quilting, and many other techniques.

Washington’s State Art Collection has also included textiles since the very beginning of the Collection in 1974. Our collection includes quilts, tapestries and rugs, weavings, and many more artworks that use a wide variety of techniques. These types of artworks are also often called “fiber art” – especially when the end result doesn’t look like a traditional “textile.”
