Dancer With Yellow String, 1982
Judith Simonian
(American, born 1945)
Location: Washington State Arts Commission, Olympia
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Dancer With Yellow String is part of artist Judith Simonian's "Whirling Dervish" series. She begins these paintings with overlapping circles. She sees the figures as “spinning vessels” with the yellow string highlighting their symmetry and balance. She notes, "The very act of painting them was akin to a frenetic spinning dance. Eventually the idea of allowing the mesh of linear movement to coalesce into the form of dancers seemed quite natural."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Lakewood School District.
