ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Alison Johnston created the painting Cosmos as part of a body of works inspired by her home on the San Juan Islands and rural life in the Pacific Northwest. She notes that the title refers to "both the brilliant magenta flowers which I cultivate, as well as the interdependent nature of all living creatures on earth."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with San Juan Island School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Painter Alison Johnston creates still life, landscape and narrative paintings inspired by the northwest environment and her travels abroad.

Johnston was born in Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Cornish Institute in Seattle in 1981. She is based on San Juan Island, in North Puget Sound, Western Washington.
