ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Sursum Corda is an abstract sculpture created by artist Obie Simonis. The title is Latin, and translates to "Lift up your hearts." This phrase is the opening of an ancient Christian prayer dating back to the third century.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Pierce College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Obie Simonis creates free-standing and site-specific sculpture. Raised in Eastern Oregon, he first studied at Portland State University and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oregon. He served as an artist-in-residence at Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon in 1978. He later moved to Massachusetts, where he lives and works.
