ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Sleeping Out is a pastel drawing by artist Debra Davis. The artist heard a great horned owl while camping near Naneum Canyon in Central Washington, which inspired the composition. Describing her experience, the artist notes, “I had supper, watched the sun go down, and the stars came out. It was a clear windless evening. When I crawled into the tent, I went right to sleep. I woke up once when I heard a great horned owl hooting down in the canyon. To my sleepy ears, it sounded like the sound was coming out of the ground below me. I looked out at the glittering stars, and went back to sleep.”
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma School District.
