ABOUT THE ARTWORK

NightWalker by artist Susan Schuppli includes images and text that reflect on walking alone at night. Her installation is about the problem of violence towards women, and it asks you to think about what you might do to change this situation. Schuppli notes, "I consider artwork an important way to speak about things that happen in our society and feel that artwork can assist us in developing a better understanding of complex social relations.” With help from campus safety and women's groups, Schuppli collected information about staying safe while walking alone. These tips were on cards and available at the bus stop. Schuppli's work as an artist and curator has often examined issues around the idea of "control" within public and private spaces. Schuppli's images were temporarily installed in six lightboxes at the bus stop outside of the UW School of Art.

This artwork was part of a group of rotating installations on the University of Washington campus. The artists were selected in a competitive process to create images for existing lightboxes at bus stops outside of the UW's School of Art and Meany Hall. The images were reproduced as large-scale transparencies to fit the lightboxes. The bus stops featured the artworks for several months.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University of Washington.
