ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Salmon Stone is one of two cast bronze sculptures by artist Frank Boyden commissioned for South Puget Sound Community College. It is part of the artist's body of work inspired by the fossils and bones found in organic objects and stones. He notes, "I wanted the pieces to appear fresh, as though pieces of the material had just fallen off, revealing interiors, but at the same time I wanted there to be a sense that the pieces could have been things long weathered and found in a stream bed or cast upon the coast."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with South Puget Sound Community College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Oregon-based artist Frank Boyden creates ceramic, print, and sculptural works that investigate the natural environment. He and his wife Jane Boyden co-founded the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon Coast.

Boyden earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colorado College. He earned both a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Yale University in Connecticut.
