ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Whispering Pines by Perri Lynch Howard is part of her "Travelers" series of paintings. They examine the relationship between navigation, intuition, and the human need to explore. The paintings combine aviation charts, drawings, collage, and painting. A paratrooper with an open parachute – a symbol found in many of her paintings from the 2010s – also floats through the painting. Lynch's art maps the complexity of real-world experiences, but also invites unique emotional responses.

This artwork is part of a curated collection by Renee Adams in March 2023 for a new Science & Technology Building at Walla Walla Community College, in Southeastern Washington. The collection brings together artists who combine art and science. They use scientific approaches such as observation and experimentation, precise measurements and calculations. A desire to learn more about our world and share that knowledge is at the heart of both scientific and creative pursuits.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Walla Walla Community College.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Perri Lynch Howard's art examines the relationship between human perception and sense of place. Questions about navigation, intuition, and physical proximity are important factors in these investigations. Her public artworks draw attention to where land meets sky, sea meets shore, and where one’s inner landscape converges with the outside world. Her work includes painting, drawing, sculpture, and sound installations.

Lynch Howard earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia, a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She is based in Twisp, North Central Washington.
