Descending the Ravine, 2022
Cameron Anne Mason
(American, born 1963)
Location: Elk Ridge Elementary, Buckley
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Cameron Anne Mason's fabric artwork Descending the Ravine is inspired by the two worlds of the natural and the built, our place in the environment, and how they meet. Mason gathers leaves and fronds from her walks. Their yearly cycle of growth and death is captured and frozen with dyes on fabric. She notes how fabrics "protect us from the elements, give us comfort, and are a means to express ourselves. I am drawn to fabric because of its changeability and its constancy."
This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with White River School District.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Seattle-based artist Cameron Anne Mason creates sculptures, installations, and assemblages using hand-dyed and manipulated fabrics. She notes, "I work with themes of time, from passing of the seasons to the geologic ages shown through layers of stone and erosion. Nature, and the evidence of human hands upon it, is my inspiration."
