ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The suspended installation Fly Away by Guy Kemper suggests birds flying through the space. The artwork's yellow and brown colors were inspired by the varied thrush, a bird that is local to the area around Pierce College in Fort Steilacoom, in Pierce County, Western Washington.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Pierce College District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Guy Kemper is a painter and sculptor who creates distinctive spaces using color and light. He works mainly with blown glass and mosaic.

Kemper earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Kentucky in 1981. He lives on 95 acres of cliffs and waterfalls in Kentucky.
