ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Perspective by Shaun Kardinal explores space, time, and the climate crisis. The artwork is a collage of vintage postcards that are carefully arranged and connected with hand-drawn ink lines. Kardinal reminds us of the relationships between everything that surrounds us. The scenes from the past prompt us to consider the change that has already happened and the effect of our future actions.

This artwork is part of a curated collection by Asia Tail for North Hill Elementary, in Des Moines, Western Washington, in July 2021. The local art selection committee wanted art that reflects their diversity, their values as a sustainable green school, and the 5th grade experience of growth, togetherness, and transitions. The artworks show us that everything is connected. Asia Tail notes “Just as people shape the land, the land shapes us. How we treat our plant and animal relatives matters now and for all the generations that come next.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Highline School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Shaun Kardinal is a conceptual artist "creating form from repeating parts—one from many, many from one". He creates altered objects, modular structures, collaborative exhibition platforms, and interactive physical-digital installations.

Born and raised in suburban California, Kardinal moved to Seattle right out of high school. He began working in the arts a few years later, running a not-for-profit art gallery. As a web developer and graphic designer, he has collaborated with dozens of artists, galleries, and arts organizations. He has served as a member of SOIL artist-run gallery, Crawl Space Gallery, and co-founded Some Space Gallery (all in Seattle, WA).
