Welcome Sapling, 2020

Kate Jessup
(American)

Location: Klahowya Secondary School, Silverdale

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Welcome Sapling by artist Kate Jessup captures the point of view of a very young sapling tree looking up at the canopy of local Northwest trees and plants on the Kitsap Peninsula in South Puget Sound. The panels include spruce wood, redcedar wood, ferns, rhododendrons, salmonberry, salal, snowberry, and twinberry plants, as well as insects, made with stained glass mosaic. Jessup notes: “The different species are intertwined and growing together and represented at all different stages of growth. The imagery extends from the forest floor up through the tree canopy, so that the wall behind it acts as the sky… The goal is to inspire a sense of joy, inclusiveness and excitement as students start their school day.”

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Central Kitsap School District.
