Hydro Logic, 2018

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Hydro Logic is a monumental sculpture created by artist Beliz Brother for Helen Sommers Building, on the Capitol Campus in Olympia. Many state agencies, including the Washington State Patrol, use this building every day.

Ten unique sections represent the ten major watershed areas of Washington State. Brother based each section’s design on data about the people, history, and natural resources of the watershed area. She notes, "The artwork harnesses and explodes with the energy of one of our greatest natural resources: water. It honors the history of our state — from the names of our original Native American tribes to our agricultural heritage, to our location on the Northwest Coast of the United States. It recognizes our industries of fishing, shipping and forestry, our beauty, our recreational activities and the very importance of water to all life."

Brother created the installation artwork entirely from aluminum. She bent, formed, and powder-coated each aluminum piece to represent the color and flow of water.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Department of Enterprise Services.
