Undercurrent, 2018

Aaron Hussey
(American, born 1963)

Location: Othello High School, Othello

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Aaron Hussey created Undercurrent to celebrate the strength of Othello's farming culture in Central Washington. Steel shaped like leaves and plants seems to grow out of the sculpture's steel ribs. Within the structure, curved blue steel represents the Columbia River. Hussey composed these elements around a "mandorla" shaped base, formed by two overlapping circles. Many cultures use this shape to represent a spiritual dwelling. Hussey describes the shape as "a place for transformation" at the intersection of two ideas.

Undercurrent represents the connection between our man-made and natural environments. It also represents the intersection of different opportunities open to graduates of Othello High School.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Othello School District.
