Acts of Kindness, 2009

Julie Prather
(American, born 1942)

Location: University Place Primary, University Place

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Artist Julie Prather collaborated with students at University Place Primary to create the Acts of Kindness stained glass artwork. It surrounds the entrance doors to the school’s library. Prather worked with the Art Selection Committee to identify the theme “acts of kindness” which corresponds to values taught at the school. Teachers then asked students to create drawings on that theme. Prather chose a variety of elements and ideas from the drawings and reincarnated them into the eight stained glass window panels. The final artwork shows children helping and playing with each other, holding hands, and generally doing things together in twosomes. By including students, the community at the school feels a strong connection to the finished artwork.

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with University Place School District.
