ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Plumeria was captured by late photographer Elwood Jones on the island of Kauai in Hawaii. He used a unique and intimate perspective to highlight the vibrant colors and dramatic structure of his subject. This piece is part of the artist's lifelong body of work dedicated to presenting the "universal expression" of flowers as symbols of "peace, sorrow, love, and joy."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Tacoma School District.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Seattle-based psychiatrist Dr. Elwood Jones (1925-2005) was an accomplished photographer, with works collected nationally. Best known for his intimate compositions of flowers, Jones sought to "preserve in imagery their ephemeral beauty."
