Love Thy Neighbor, 1998

Sally Sellers
(American, born 1951)

Location: Sorenson Early Childhood Center, Bothell

ABOUT THE ARTWORK

Love Thy Neighbor is part of artist Sally Sellers' series of quilts composed with repeating imagery of houses. Sellers began the series after her young daughter was moved from home to a nursing facility due to serious illness. Sellers notes that the body of work was created to challenge the concept of what a home is, and as a meditation on the instincts to nurture and protect. This quilt is composed in a geometric grid with one of the houses inverted. Speaking to the significance of this configuration Sellers notes, "rather than staying within the boundaries, in isolation, one of the houses has reached out to connect with its neighbor. It is through such connections that we strengthen our community."

This artwork was acquired for the State Art Collection in partnership with Northshore School District.
